AEW wrestler John Hoover (aka Brodie Lee) Died Last month after a long battle with a mysterious lung disease. His wife Amanda joined AEW unlimited A podcast that provides a detailed timeline for Brodie Lee’s tragic battle. To hear her full account, you need to listen to the full podcast.
Brody first noticed something was wrong when he couldn’t finish his training on the Peloton bike in October. The shortness of breath he experienced was alarming. COVID-19 was an urgent concern, but there were no other obvious symptoms. Within a few days he developed a high fever, but the COVID test was negative.
He was finally hospitalized and diagnosed with bronchitis and allergies, which felt like pneumonia. The fever went away, but his oxygen levels dropped so badly that he was placed in an oxygen machine. By Halloween, he had to be transferred to another hospital, and that was when they decided on the Mayo Clinic.
The possibility of a lung transplant is now on the table, and Brody has been placed on an ECMO machine to artificially support his breathing. Here’s how Amanda described his lung condition:
“All COVID tests are back negative. Now that you have a positive test, did you get the correct answer? … just like what is this? So I’m actually I don’t have an autopsy report yet, so I’m not 100% sure, but I think the official diagnosis was idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. This literally means that his lungs were injured, and the idiopathic part is they. Means they don’t know why. They don’t know what happened to his lungs, but they know that his lungs were only completely damaged … they I think any fever he had was his body fighting an infection in his lungs. The problem is that his body with a high fever he had for several days basically had his lung tissue. It attacked and hurt it, so by the time we were in the hospital there was no infection and everything was already out of his system, but the scar tissue that remained was there. Therefore, on X-rays and scans, the lungs should be completely black on the scan. And he was completely white. They were completely injured. So they rested his body and his lungs. I put him in ECMO as a chance not to use it. And let’s just try and heal his lungs. That was hope, but obviously it didn’t happen. “
From there his condition went back and forth between improvement and decline. However, after a panic attack in late November, things got worse and led to an urgent decision on a lung transplant. Later, a new infection appeared in his lungs, and by mid-December the fight was hopeless.
“They said what it was. It’s a really super-common bacterium that’s everywhere. But he was immunocompromised and badly shaped, so the bacterium grew and his lungs were just … he seemed to have been raped. “
It has reached a point where lung transplantation is no longer a viable option. On Christmas Eve, she was informed that his heart and kidneys were malfunctioning. It was time for end-of-life care.
When she told her son Brody Jr. the tragic news, she asked Big E and Cody Rhodes to be there.
“I was very close to Cody throughout this process, and … his best friend Brodie Lee Jr. worldwide since he was 2 years old is WWE’s Big E, so I’m both Also called, I think it’s Christmas Eve or Christmas Day … When we talk to Brodie, I want you guys to be with me. That was the worst part of all this, hey, Like your favorite person in the world, your hero, telling your 8 year old, yeah, he’s going to die today. How do you crush someone? “
Brodie Lee died on December 26th.
I can’t really justify Amanda Hoover’s words. This summary provides a lot of detail, so I encourage you to listen. Podcast If you want to better understand the complete timeline of Brodie Lee’s fight against this terrible lung condition that killed him, yourself.
