Antimicrobial sales continue to decline

Antimicrobial sales continue to decline

The FDA states that sales of antibacterial agents used in food-producing animals continue to decline.

Sales were down 3% from 2019 to 2020, down nearly 40% from just five years ago.

About 40% of sales are for cattle, another 40% for pigs, an estimated 12% for turkeys and 2% for chickens.

FDASales data do not reflect use, but this is a positive step as it works to delay antimicrobial resistance and maintain their effectiveness against humans and animals.

In 2017, many products were not marketed as part of the Veterinary Feed Directive and required veterinary oversight.
