Since closing the Ezio trilogy almost 10 years ago, Assassin’s Creed has been winding in both its historical background and its level of quality. I’ve played all the mainline entries in this beloved series, but I’ve never enjoyed it as much as the Apocalypse and its stunning predecessor, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood. While these games are vast and visually breathtaking, the rehashed confusion of their stories and gameplay mechanics ultimately keeps them away from greatness.
That said, Assassin’s Creed Valhara offers the Viking epic, which is the closest thing this series can bring back to its former glory and has already attracted a lot of fans. This is the culmination of what Ubisoft started with Assassin’s Creed Origins, pivoting the series towards a witcher-style action RPG.

It’s not without flaws, but it’s a victory. Assassin’s Creed: Valhara may not be a long-delayed return to the roots of the series that some enthusiasts have been waiting for, but it’s one of the strongest open-world games of 2020, and probably the first. Easily succeed in becoming one of the games on your PS5 or Xbox Series X | S.
Valhalla connects you to yet another animus as Leila, Sean, and Rebecca escape to another part of the series’ current story arc. At the moment, despite being Assassin’s Creed’s most important story thread, it’s honestly very difficult to care what these three are doing today. Ubisoft dropped the current ball long ago and has been groping ever since. Thankfully, Eivor’s barbaric story, and Valhalla’s myriad other Vikng stories, are more than enough to get your attention.

The invading Nordic race searches the country for land to settle and a kingdom to destroy. Some have adopted brute force tactics, while others are trying to form a practical alliance with the Raven clan of Eivor in the middle.
Both Assassin’s Creed Origins and Odyssey were huge games. The 60-hour or longer RPG outlook may be a paradise for some fans, but so many have found this approach too overwhelming. Surviving the vast land filled with infinite filler content is a shortcut to fatigue, and one Valhalla can almost manage to avoid it.

Don’t get me wrong. There is absolutely a lot of content here. Once Ubisoft has completed the Season Pass deployment (moving to both Ireland and Paris), the game can easily be clocked in in over 100 hours. However, that split method makes Valhalla much easier to digest than its direct predecessor.
Once you’ve set up your own Viking settlement, Ravensthorpe, in the heart of England, you’re looking for an alliance with the surrounding counties and kingdoms, and each time you pledge to embark on a new main story arc.
You can go anywhere freely (I immediately traveled to the Isle of Wight in the south), but the story structure of Valhalla and the power levels associated with each region are softly concentrated from one area to the next. Helps to.
Each story arc has its own story to tell. Some are more powerful than others, but they all influence Eivor’s development as characters and often provide players with multiple approaches to address specific scenarios. Speaking of Eivor, regardless of gender you choose, it acts as a great avatar for Viking Romps across the UK, injecting enough of your character while letting players build their own destiny.
Again, Assassin’s Creed is divided into three pillars: combat, stealth, and exploration. Valhalla relies on the latter without apologizing and cannot blame Ubisoft exactly. The portrayal of war-torn medieval England in its wild and mysterious wonders is captivating yet gritty, sometimes combined with fantasy elements and linked to Norse mythology.
Stealth is easy and allows anyone who wants to play as a silent assassin type. By mastering the hidden blades and Eivor’s bow, you can clear the entire camp without being detected. Ducking in and out of the cover, monitoring patrols, and popping accurate headshots can be fun and fluid, especially when you raise the hood and blend in with the crowd.
However, the Vikings were not exactly known for sculpting in the shadows. I spent most of my time facing my enemies head-on, swinging my ax, tearing my shield, and cutting off my limbs. Close quarters combat relies on a combination of light and heavy attacks combined with blocking, evasion, and timely parrying.
It checks all the boxes in the very basic checklist. Eivor’s bonus abilities allow you to put eight flashy combat techniques into slots, but combat gameplay is a bit bland overall. I’m enjoying it little by little, but after a while I continued to join the autopilot and unknowingly mowed the entire warband.
Valhalla prefers a Viking assault that involves dozens of fighters in a battle, rather than a clever duel between a handful of warriors. As a result, combat is bigger, more chaotic, and most enemies use the same basic AI by default, while other enemies act as if they were in their own world.
How you approach Assassin’s Creed Valhara, you’ll steadily gain resources and experience, which will be returned to the settlement and entered into Eivor’s huge skill tree. Whether you’re sailing a longboat to a protected monastery or going through one of the game’s long story arcs, Valhalla is happy with the rewards offered.
