Bellator Announces Moved to Showtime: Yoel Romero vs. Anthony’Rumble’ Johnson Set for New LHW Grand Prix – MMA Sports

2021 kicks off with a major move towards one of the largest MMA organizations in the world. Bellator took much longer to get things done than the UFC during the COVID-19 pandemic, but still ended the year with a pair of 18 cards and a newly crowned champion. The promotion won’t start its first show in 2021 until April, but this year should be an unforgettable year for Viacom-owned companies.

At a media call on Tuesday, February 9, the promotion clarified its plans for the future. First of all, Bellator will leave Paramount Network for Showtime, a former home of Elite XC and Strikeforce, a companion to the Viacom CBS network. Premium Cable Channel, along with past MMA partnerships, has a long history of martial arts hosting regular boxing cards.

With the move to a new broadcaster, Bellator will launch the 2021 event calendar with a top eight light heavyweight tournament. In the bracket, recently crowned champion Vadim Nemkov will protect the belt from Phil Davis, and former champion Ryan Bader will face former UFC LHW king Lyoto Machida.

But the real jewel of the Grand Prix opening round crown will be the battle between former UFC title challenger Yoel Romero and Anthony’Rumble’Johnson. This is Romero’s first match since Romero reached a mutual agreement to terminate the UFC contract. The “Soldier of God” finally fought Israel Adesanya at UFC 248 in March 2020.

For Johnson, this fight will be his first professional striking fight of all sorts since he demanded the UFC Light Heavyweight Strap from Daniel Cormier in April 2017. Johnson retired from MMA after his defeat, but is a source of constant conversation from fans wondering when or when he will return to competition. The match between Corey Anderson and Dovletdzhan Yagshimuradov concludes with parentheses.

The first leg of Bellator’s LHW tournament will begin on April 9th, with Bader vs. Machida & Anderson vs. Yagshimuradov. The remaining two opening rounds will take place next week on April 16th at Romero vs Johnson and Nemkov vs Davis.
