Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas accelerated in the second free practice session of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at the end of this weekend’s season, with a red-flagged session when Kimi Raikkonen’s Alfa Romeo fired.
The opening phase of the 90-minute session devoted itself to driving on the prototype Pirelli C4 compound tires, with the driver completing the required eight laps on the development rubber.
However, all three major drivers were unable to set their best times with their soft compound tires due to turn 1 off, track limits and slow traffic.
When the team returned to the compound offered this weekend, Lewis Hamilton quickly moved to the top of the timesheet with a 1: 36.479 lap set on medium tyres.
However, Bottas struck his teammates who came back on a lap of 1: 36.276 with the same compound, and it was the lap that remained as a benchmark until the checkered flag.
Hamilton moved to a soft compound for qualifying simulation, but his best time on red band tires was removed due to a track limit breach in the final corner.
Bottas then went on a run, but when he made a small mistake in the first corner and ran wide, his flying lap also compromised.
Miss gave Max Verstappen, the fastest man in the first session, the opportunity to double the day, but during his flying lap he was running longer Sergio Perez’s slow racing point. I came across a car.
Verstappen managed another run in the soft, but this time he also removed the time to run wide on the final turn.
The team then switched to a long run, but was interrupted with 20 minutes remaining when Raikkonen’s Alfa Romeo fired in the middle of the lap. The Finns pulled, but the rear of his car was immediately engulfed in flames, showing a red flag.
The session was suspended for more than 10 minutes and resumed for less than 5 minutes. Hamilton left the garage for another short period of time, but stopped in front of the Haas garage due to a clutch problem. With the help of his mechanic, he was able to move on again, but with little to gain from the rest.
The top three of Botta, Hamilton and Verstappen all had the best times with medium tires, and Alex Albon was the best soft tire runner. Red Bull’s driver also removed many laps due to a breach of track restrictions, but eventually set a best time of 1: 37.263 to take fourth place ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris.
Renault’s Esteban Ocon led Perez in 6th place, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo and Racing Point’s Lance Stroll closing the top ten.
George Russell also had a problem with the session. Williams had to return Williams to the pit lane because of a suspected MGU-K problem.
