Former Formula One World Champion Jenson Button will race for his own team when the new Extreme E Off-Road All-Electric Series begins later this year, Briton said Monday.
All teams in the series, which aim to raise awareness about climate change by racing in the most remote and harsh environments of the world, require male and female drivers. Button’s teammates will be announced shortly.
“I’m happy to announce that Team jbxeracing will be joining Extreme E in the first season. I can’t wait to get the Extreme E beast,” said Button, who won the F1 title at Brawn GP in 2009. I wrote on Twitter.
Rivals include teams owned by F1 champions Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.
Run by Formula E founder Alejandro Agag, the series will begin in April, two weeks behind the opening round in Saudi Arabia.
The round will also be held in Senegal, Greenland, the Brazilian rainforest and the Argentine glacier in Tierra del Fuego.
