CCL Rewind: Atlanta United lasts longer than Alahu Elense, Timbers Thai Club Marathon – Soccer Sports

Gabriel Einze’s first competition for Atlanta won on Tuesday night, and the club took a major step towards advancing in the CONCACAF Champions League.

Ezequiel Barco scored the only goal of Five Stripes 1-0 with Costa Rica’s host LD Alahu Elense. Back-up goalkeeper Roccoli Osnova played an important role in the victory, making seven saves on his first team debut following Brad Guzan’s exit.

Five Stripes had a better chance in the first half as Barco and Emerson Hyndman saved a shot by Leonel Moreira. Guzan was sent off only once by Johan Venegas in the first half, but veteran goalkeeper was sent off in the 43rd minute after defeating Marcel Hernandez Campanioni out of the box.

José Salvatiera whistled his handball early in the second half, allowing Barco to step up from the penalty spot and score the first goal of the season.

Rios stole the show after Five Stripes took the lead, denying Adrian Martinez’s attempt to shoot four times and repelling the second half of Hernandez’s strike in the 92nd minute.

The Eastern Conference Club has been waiting for a significant road victory for the second leg of next week at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Josef Martinez may also be well-suited to start the second leg next week after returning to the Five Stripes pitch and playing the last 24 minutes tonight.

Club Marathon 2 – Portland Timbers 2

The Portland Timbers were good enough to win a 2-2 draw against the club marathon on Tuesday night, but it would be a bit disappointing to see two separate reeds slipping down the road.

Overall, it was a powerful debut for Giovanni Savarese men in their first competitive match of the new season. Felipemora broke the deadlock in the 35th minute, but Timbers will see the Honduras host fight back half-time before.

Brian Castillo caught up with the tie in the 39th minute and slammed Cross from Edwin Solano past Steve Clark.

Diego Valeri did not score the Timbers’ final opening goal in the 59th minute, but played a role with a 2-1 advantage in Portland. His long range shot was repelled from the post by Denovan Torres, but the ball bounced off the goalkeeper’s back for an own goal.

The marathon counterattacked again to give a positive chance ahead of next week’s trip to Providence Park. Marlon Ramirez hit a low shot across a 16-yard box and hit Clark in the lower left corner.

Clark finished with two saves for the Timbers and Torres saved three times for the host.
