January 29 – Following the AFC Champions League draw earlier this week, Conca Cuff announced that it would raise the 16-team Champions League draw to February 10.
Last year’s AFC and Conca Cuff Champions League winners Ulsan Hyundai and Tigres UANL will face each other at the Club World Cup in Qatar on February 4th. The winner will play the Copa Libertadores Champion on February 7th in the semi-finals. Conmebol completed the tournament on January 30th in Maracana, Rio de Janeiro, between Palmeiras and Santos in Brazil.
Both coalitions will need their teams to participate in the 2021 2nd Club World Cup in December in Qatar. The calendar is already packed with World Cup qualifying requirements, and Conca Cuff is hosting an expanded version of the Blue Ribbon Gold Cup in the United States in the summer, making club tournament dates tighter and less flexible. ..
Concacaf focused on a 16-team knockout competition and was a two-legged draw, but the competition was slightly streamlined as the finals were played as one match.
The contest starts in early April and ends in October with the finals.
One of the teams that will not participate in the February draw is the current champion Tigres, who failed to qualify for Mexico’s Liga MX. Mexico has a vicious grip in the Champions League, which has won the last 15 editions. In 2021, Club America, Club Leon, Cruz Azul and CF Monterley will be the representatives.
Their biggest challenge will come again from the United States and MLS, where teams are showing increasing willingness to compete. The draw will be for Atlanta United, Columbus Crew, Philadelphia Union and Portland Timbers. Canada’s MLS franchise Toronto may also qualify if it wins the Canada Cup.
