Cotton demand paces towards record highs

Global demand for cotton could reach record highs this year, one economist said. This is a level that has not been seen since the Great Recession.

CoBank’s Rob Fox told Brownfield that the market is being amplified by supply chain turmoil.

“Spinners that make threads and the like can’t get cotton on time, so there isn’t enough fabric and everyone is currently struggling to get a supply of cotton,” Fox said. ..

And he said the trend would continue.

“Demand is skyrocketing and China is buying. They are out of strategic cotton inventories and are trying to replenish US cotton and other sources,” he said.

Cotton prices rose more than 50 percent last year, Fox said.
