COVID-19: South Africa says it is being punished for early detection of new variants

South Africa has advanced detection of new COVID-19 variants early on Saturday as travel bans and restrictions were imposed because new Omicron variants could harm other sectors of tourism and the economy. He said he was punished for his ability.

South Africa has world-class epidemiologists and scientists who have succeeded in detecting new coronavirus variants and their variants early in the life cycle. The Omicron subspecies was first discovered in South Africa and subsequently in Belgium, Botswana, Israel and Hong Kong.

“This latest travel ban is similar to punishing South Africa for its advanced genomic sequencing and its ability to detect new variants more quickly,” said the Department of International Relations and Cooperation.

“Good science should be praised and not punished,” he said in a statement.

Many countries havetily announced travel restrictions to South Africa and other countries in the region on Fridays and Saturdays.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said new variants have been detected in other countries, but the global response to those countries is “totally different” from the case in southern Africa.

The new variant was first announced Wednesday by a team of South African scientists. They said they had detected variants that could evade the body’s immune response and make it more contagious.

On Friday, the World Health Organization named it Omicron and designated it as a “variant of concern” (the most serious level), saying preliminary evidence suggests an increased risk of reinfection.read more

South Africa’s Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor said in a statement, “Our immediate concern is the damage these restrictions are causing to families, travel, tourism and business.”

The government added that it had worked with countries imposing travel bans to persuade them to reconsider.

On Friday, WHO warned countries to rush to impose travel restrictions related to variants, saying that a “risk-based scientific approach” should be taken.
