Covid-19 vaccine: SII feeding COVAX countries 20 million Covishield doses after WHO nods

SII has contracted to supply 1.1 billion doses of AstraZeneca-Oxford and Novavax Covid-19 vaccines to COVAX facilities, of which 550 million will be AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccines.

The Serum Institute of India (SII) has been approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) to supply the AstraZeneca-Oxford Covid-19 vaccine Covishield to other countries.

Pre-qualification by WHO will allow the company to export to African countries and other low and middle income countries under the COVAX initiative. SII plans to export 20 million doses of Covishield vaccine to COVAX countries by the end of February. So far, we have manufactured 100 million doses.

Adar Poonawalla, CEO of SII, previously stated that everyone in the world is looking forward to a large amount of vaccines from India at an affordable price. “About 50-60% of the world’s vaccines are made in India,” he said. He also said he had enough inventories to supply and export to the Government of India.

India has so far ordered 21 million Covishield doses to immunize front-line healthcare professionals, with a first dose of 85,00,000 vaccines and a second dose of 160,291 vaccines. I am inoculating.

WHO announced on Monday that two versions of the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine (manufactured by Serum Institute and SKBio of South Korea) will be listed for emergency use and will be rolled out globally through COVAX.

WHO expects these vaccines to reach other countries in the coming weeks. According to the review, the vaccine is 63.09% effective and is suitable for low and middle income countries due to its simple storage requirements.

In collaboration with the GAVI Vaccine Alliance and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, SII will supply 200 million doses for $ 3 each in 2021. The arrangement also offers the option of ensuring additional doses, potentially several times the total dose of 200 million doses, if the COVAX facility recognizes the need for it. SII received $ 300 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Strategic Investment Fund to expedite vaccine production. The vaccine will be available in 92 countries.

“Countries that previously did not have access to vaccines will finally be able to begin vaccination of health care workers and those at risk, contributing to the goal of fair vaccine distribution at COVAX facilities.” Dr. Mariângela Simão, Deputy Director of Drug Access at WHO, said. SII has built the largest pandemic-level facility at its Manjri plant in Pune, increasing its capacity to 1.2 billion times annually. Production is expected to recover after WHO pre-qualification screening.
