Virtual entertainers, also known as Vtubers, are spending a moment now. This is primarily due to the lower barriers to creating digital avatars than ever before. If desired, you can ask an expert to create a Vtubing model for hundreds or thousands of dollars. Alternatively, you can download some software and do it yourself — it’s completely free.
During the holidays, Steam saw the release of VRoid Studio, a program that allows you to create 3D models of humanoid characters. You can use your work in games like VR chat, Or as an avatar for streaming. This program can be used for both commercial and non-commercial use. This is great because it means you don’t have to worry about other entities that own your work.
“You don’t have to be artistic to use the program,” reads a top review on the Steam store page. “You can use your hair to make accessories such as horns, wings, tails, glasses, and earrings. With enough practice and skill, you can make a very creative model.” Store description Also states that there is a lot of flexibility in making facial expressions. However, in the review, keep in mind that the program is demanding and can be delayed unless you are using the finest rigs. Still, given the price tag, it’s hard to complain.
The program was technically available before this release, but by joining Steam, the world’s largest PC game distribution platform, we can undoubtedly bring Vtubing to even more viewers. Already, the VRoid Studio Community tab is full of people showing off new avatars, such as at the top of this post where Steam user Juliet-Veil announced the animated version of fursona. Many people have never used such resources before, so many people in the community want help navigating the program. As such tools become more ubiquitous and user-friendly, the wave of Vtubing could grow to new heights in 2021.
