“It was terrible,” White said at a press conference after the event. “It was a good fight. It was an exciting fight for everyone. Everyone knew it would be better. It was a bad thing.”

Yang was in control of the momentum as the battle entered the deep sea and Sterling was visibly tired. After the exchange, when the challenger rested on one knee, the Russians stopped for a moment before putting their blatantly illegal knees on their heads. Sterling soon hit the canvas and was badly hurt, and the fight was stopped after a cageside doctor examined him.

The knees were clearly intentional, so Sterling was judged a winner due to disqualification and declared a new UFC bantamweight champion.

Later, Yang said he was unaware that Sterling was considered a down opponent when he raised his knees.

“Before the match, the referee paid a lot of attention to the position of his hands, whether or not the fighter was grounded,” he told reporters behind the scenes. “I was too focused on his hand and forgot his foot. Obviously, I wasn’t going to make an illegal shot.”

Sterling had a hard time explaining what happened in the post-match interview after the win. He was later checked out at a local hospital and was found to have been seriously injured by a doctor.

On social media, Sterling apologized to his fans and guaranteed that there would be a rematch.

White couldn’t immediately provide a timeline for the second fight, but said it would be decided at the matchmaking meeting on Tuesday.

“Sterling also wants a rematch,” he said. “We understand that.”
