Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer tweeted that Randy Orton’s Raw mask was influenced by Dick Beyer. Beyer was known as The Destroyer and Doctor X. He wrestled in Japan and was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, one of the highest honors in Japan, in 2017. He made his debut in 1954 and retired in 1993. Bayer died in 2019 at the age of 88.
Randy Orton’s mask was part of the story of Alexa Bliss being burned after throwing a fireball on her face last week in retaliation for burning Bray Wyatt at TLC PPV last week.
Orton cut a long promotion, saying he blamed Fiend for his burns, not Alexa Bliss, and confirmed that he would continue to play in the Royal Rumble match. Orton said he enjoyed the pain of burns, which stimulated every movement of him.
Nick Hausman of Wrestling Inc.com praised the promotion and mask angle on Twitter and tweeted: “Randy Orton is Teflon. All the wrestlers and stories he’s involved with are better for it. A true goat.”
Aaron Rift, owner of NoDQ.com, jokes: “Is Randy Orton the latest member of Retribution? #WWE #RAW.” Ryan Satin also said, “This week’s slapjack looks a lot like Randy Orton. It’s weird.”
In addition to Orton’s participation in the 30-man match, it has not yet been confirmed whether he will wrestle with Bray Wyatt again at Royal Rumble. Orton’s rumored WrestleMania opponent Just revealed.
