One of the many stories for the 2021 season was the depth of pitching within the Dodgers organization. The team was already deeply involved following the 2020 World Series victory, but went out and added more names to the mix. Spring training has taken on a new level of importance to many of them, as so many talented athletes compete for spots on the first day’s roster.
Here, we’ll look at some of the names that have been making noise during this spring’s training, some of the names that could get out of the role, and some in between.
Achieved too much
Jimmy Nelson – 3.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 4 SO
The team has eight pitchers who can start the game when the season begins tomorrow, including Jimmy Nelson. With so many starters already on the 40-person roster, the team seemed likely to bring Nelson as a rescuer.Instead, Dave Roberts revealed it The organization considers him a starter, Leave more questions about how rotations stack up.
To his honor, Nelson looked great in his three-inning work this spring. He is in command of all the pitches and then looks healthy Back surgery last season.. If the team starts the season with Nelson in the starting rotation, that almost certainly means that both Dustin May and Tony Gonsolin will move to the bullpen.

Dennis Santana – 4.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 5 SO
Santana faces a more difficult challenge on the road to the roster location, but he’s been incredibly impressive so far this spring. He gave up only one hit throughout the spring and his speed was consistently high in the 90’s.
Dave Roberts praised Dennis as one of the outstanding spring training players to date and said he was in command of the ball like anyone else. With all the right-handed options from the bullpen, the Dodgers may have no choice but to find a place for Santana if they continue to do this.
Garrett Kleibinger – 4.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 7 SO
No other pitcher is as impressive as Garrett Cleavinger this spring. His speed has consistently improved, averaging .143 batters in four appearances. The Dodgers are so keen on Penn’s spot that it’s no wonder he’s tied to the team lead in this spring’s appearance. Still, few people expected him to look so good early in his tenure in LA.
Dave Roberts states he wants two left-handers from the bullpen, and Victor Gonzalez essentially locks one of those spots, so Kleibinger is very reluctant to take him out of the conversation. I’m making it difficult.
Last night’s LHP Garrett Kleibinger’s Dave Roberts: “Conversely, he’s a leverage relief … [we’ll] Get him accustomed to what we are doing and make him more comfortable. “
Doc also likes his fastball, adding that “he can command the fastball.” # Dodgers

Scott Alexander – 2.2 IP, 6.75 ERA, 2 SO
It’s hard to pick a player with such a small sample size this spring, but it’s necessary due to the large number of overachievers. Alexander’s inflated ERA actually gave up only two runs, but his pitch doesn’t look sharp enough to allow it. The opposite batter is currently hitting .364 from Alexander. This is the best average for the Dodgers pitchers competing for bullpen spots other than Corey Knebel.
Scott has some rationale for continuing the conversation as he approaches the opening round, as Kleibinger makes the striking claim that he is the second left-handed bullpen.
Kelly thought it was a bullpen rock this season, but he hasn’t appeared in the game yet and it’s starting to be a concern. Joe Kelly was a limited participant due to an undisclosed illness, but the fact that he had no plans to get him into the game led to questions about something more.It doesn’t help Dave Roberts admit it He may not be ready for the opening round..
Assuming Kelly isn’t ready by April 1, the Dodgers have enough weapons to fill the gap. Still, this is not the ideal start to the contract season for aging rescuers.
