Studies in mice suggest that mushrooms may suppress androgen receptor activity.
Chemicals in white-button mushrooms can slow the progression of prostate cancer, according to a mouse study that was effectively presented at ENDO 2021, the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society.
“Androgen, a male hormone, promotes the growth of prostate cancer cells by binding to and activating the androgen receptor, a protein expressed in prostate cells,” said senior researcher Xiaoqiang Wang, MD, Ph.D., MB states. (ASCP), “White button mushrooms appear to suppress androgen receptor activity,” from the Beckman Institute in Hope, a comprehensive cancer center in Duarte, California.
Shiuan Chen, Ph.D. of the City of Hope, the principal investigator of this project. Previously conducted a Phase 1 clinical trial of white button mushroom powder in patients with recurrent prostate cancer. This has shown that mushrooms reduce levels of prostate-specific antigens (PSA) in the blood with minimal side effects. Elevated blood levels of PSA in men may indicate the presence of prostate tumors.
The new research aimed to understand the mechanism behind this discovery. Researchers have studied the effects of mushroom extracts on androgen-sensitive prostate cancer cells. They also studied the effect of the extract on mice transplanted with human prostate tumors. This transforms the study into human clinical trials, creating animal models with more reliable results.
Researchers have found that white button mushroom extracts suppress androgen receptor activity in prostate cancer cells. They also found that mice treated with white button mushroom extract for 6 days had significantly suppressed prostate tumor growth and reduced PSA levels.
“We found that the white button mushroom contained a chemical that could block the activity of the androgen receptor in the mouse model, indicating that this fungus could reduce PSA levels. “We do,” said Wang. “More research is needed, but white button mushrooms may one day help prevent and treat prostate cancer.”
