ExxonMobil Corp. said a fire broke out overnight at a refinery in Baytown, Texas, injuring four people.

The flame broke out at 1 am local time. The plant is the fourth largest in the United States and can process over 500,000 barrels of oil per day. Gasoline trading in New York soared by as much as 4 cents per gallon on the New York Trading Exchange.

A fire broke out when US gasoline stockpiles reached their lowest at this time since 2015. Gasoline futures, on the other hand, will be seasonally best in eight years. Prices at 11:00 am in New York rose 1%.

According to Wood Mackenzie’s Genscape unit, the flame occurred in a unit called the reformer feed hydrotreator. Exxon spokeswoman Julie King said he was adjusting prices for other Baytown facilities to focus on stabilizing the affected units, but did not discuss the impact on fuel production. ..

Reformer feed hydrotreators are used to remove sulfur from partially refined oils, helping the finished gasoline meet clean air regulations. The unit processes the raw material to produce high octane gasoline — a prolonged impact can affect the price of premium gasoline.

Casey Cook, a spokesman for the Baytown Fire Department, said the injured workers remained stable after being transferred to the hospital.

This is the second such flame in Baytown in the last two years. In 2019, a fire broke out on the plastic production side of the industrial zone, injuring about 37 people.

According to King, air quality monitoring at the site and fence lines has shown no negative impact so far.

On December 22, Exxon reported a leak in one of Baytown’s sulfur removal units, according to a filing with state regulators. According to the filing, the leak was discovered around 10 pm on December 21st.
