Microsoft Corp’s nearly acquisition of social media app TikTok last year was “the worst thing I’ve ever done,” CEO Satya Nadella said Monday.
TikTok was ordered by then-US President Donald Trump to separate the US version from China’s parent ByteDance because of national security concerns about data collection for US users. Microsoft began discussions on a takeover offer in August 2020, but the deal collapsed by September.
Trump’s divestment push was over by the time he resigned in January, and potential suitors did not buy TikTok.
Nadella spoke at the Code Conference in Beverly Hills, California, and said she was looking forward to bringing Microsoft’s security, child safety and cloud expertise to TikTok.
“It’s incredible,” Nadella said of her experience in an interview on stage. “I learned so much about so many people. First, TikTok came in. I didn’t go to TikTok.”
“TikTok was sandwiched between many things happening in the two capitals,” Nadella continued. “President Trump had a particular perspective on what he was trying to do there, and then it just fell NS. [U.S. government] There is a specific requirement that has disappeared. “
Nadella attracted ByteDance CEO Zhang Yiming to Microsoft for content moderation and child safety in the United States, developed through products included in Xbox video game tools and the business social network LinkedIn. Said it was a corporate service.
ByteDance did not immediately respond to the request for comment.
Nadella said it was unclear if the United States was still pushing for a deal under President Joe Biden. The Biden administration said it was considering national security concerns.
“At this point, I’m happy with what I have,” Nadella said.
He also expressed support for tightening government regulations on cryptocurrency rules that could curb ransomware attacks, as ransom often flows through opaque systems. — — Reuters
