Financial stress on dairy products that are likely to be related to feed access

According to economists, the decline in dairy cow numbers reflects areas facing smaller margins and higher feed costs this year.

CoBank economist Tanner Ehmke says farmers in the Brownfields of New Mexico have been hit particularly hard.

“What we hear counter-argument is that some producers are forced to liquidate some of their herds in order to work with banks,” he says.

Ehmke says, while other regions like the Midwest are more favorable.

“In a nutshell, we can’t say that the balance sheet is nationally emphasized,” he says. “Some spots are more stressful than other spots.”

Overall, Ehmke states that farm bankruptcies are declining. This is likely related to last year’s record land prices and record farm income backed by federal programs, he says.

Larry Lee of the Brownfield interviewed Ehmke during the recent World Dairy Expo.
