Now that 2020 is over, members of the gaming community around the world are celebrating the New Year in different ways. Throughout 2020, Steam has seen an exponential increase in the number of users and games purchased. Entering the first week of 2021, you’ll see statistics for the best-selling games on Steam.
It’s an understatement to say that 2020 was a good year for Steam. As COVID-19 had such a significant impact on the entire world, more and more people turned to Steam as an entertainment facility to continue to occupy themselves during quarantine. As a result, Steam has achieved great success and growth.
However, the same success seems to be carried over to the New Year, as some popular titles continue to outperform sales. Analyst Daniel Ahmad listed the best-selling Steam games of the New Year week on Twitter, with Cyberpunk 2077 at the top of the list. Despite all the technical issues, the game is probably the most functional on the PC. In a way, this makes sense.

In terms of sales, entry at a low level is also a familiar face. Games such as Sea of Thieves, Rust, Hades, and Phasmophobia continue to maintain their lifespan and popularity on the platform. However, games that have been used on the platform for several years, such as Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Grand Theft Auto 5, and Red Dead Redemption 2, were able to break the 2021 Top 10 list.
The amount of success Steam has achieved during the last year is staggering. In 2020 alone, most simultaneous online Steam users’ records have been broken many times, with the latest broken records occurring on New Year’s Eve. The fact that all of these games continue to be successful on the platform, especially some of the older titles, is also impressive.
It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Steam in the coming months. With the impending launch of the COVID-19 vaccine, this new success achieved by the platform may begin to decline. Since then, some of the more recent games released on the platform, such as Hades, have remained popular. So, especially as the new 2021 release begins the round, more and more people will turn to Steam as a way to play all of these great games.
