There may be countless fighting games on the market today, but the basics of each game are eternal. HiFight’s FOOTSIES Rollback Edition breaks down the genre into its core and squeezes things into two directions and one button. Is its simplicity graceful, or is it too stunning for its own benefit?
FOOTSIES Rollback Edition Review
The goal of defeating an opponent may be the same as the Street Fighters and Tekken in the world, but the actions of FOOTSIES Rollback Edition are honestly focused on intervals. Players are given a kick attack and a knee attack. The kick attack goes further and the knee gets faster. If you hold down the attack button, the player will be given a special attack, and the KO can be delivered by continuous attack or special attack. There is also a blocking feature that can be performed to prevent up to 3 attacks.
There are some small additions to the gameplay, but all are summarized in these mechanics. As a result, my spacing is absolutely important in this title. Players can easily punish and win the round because the attack can be easily agitated. You can also strategize with your toolset or bait opponents, but just cheering with repeated attacks won’t work. It features only a handful of movements and one character, but there are enough variations to appeal to casual players and FGC vets alike.
For those who want a more hands-on experience, there are several modes you can dive into with FOOTSIES Rollback Edition. In addition to the ability to fight players and CPUs, it includes an arcade mode with continuous bounts. It also includes training modes, including free training, hit confirmation mini-games, whif punish mini-games, and tutorials. There are also ways to turn on hitboxes, frame advantages, and inputs so you can plan your moves into the details.
There is also an online mode that supports GGPO. No one was online during the game, but the lobby system and rollback net code included are top class and are used in today’s best fighting games.
Finally, for those who want to be the best warriors of the world of all, there are quite a few achievements. They are pretty basic, but goals such as winning an online match and clearing arcade mode without continuing encourage players to hone their skills and be the best. Keep in mind that some of these achievements are more difficult to unlock than others. At the time of writing this article, the most difficult thing is the absolutely brutal 0.9% unlock rate.
The FOOTSIES Rollback Edition may not seem part of it, but a simple presentation hides some serious depth. If you want to master the basics or need a review of the basics, enjoy this FGC-approved title.
