“Gandhi was such a sacred god of those I couldn’t connect with him.”

There is something unique about how Paro Anand approaches the book.

By Reya Mehrotra,

“I don’t know what it means to celebrate one man, one leader every year,” thinks 13-year-old Chandrashekar, excited about the reintroduction of the country’s father to scholars every year. From perhaps 1000 books on Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, we analyze a man and explore his immeasurable contributions to his life and the freedom to drive India.

Paro Anand’s Being Gandhi caters to readers as young as adults. Paro’s story captures the growing relevance of Gandhi’s philosophy and the need to rethink it over the course of a decade and with the plagues of social and political division.

When we sat down to reread the 2019 book, published by Harper Collins Children’s Books in 2021, at the Neve Literature Festival Reading Challenge for Junior Leaders aged 10 to 13, we had a national leader ideology. I recognized it again. Set during the riots of 1984, this book looks at a burning country from the eyes of a young teenager.

There is something unique about how Paro Anand approaches the book. This is not just a Gandhi book, but an up-and-coming book about Gandhi’s way of life. As the protagonist thinks, let young readers think about what to do if Gandhi takes their place.

Chandrashekhar unknowingly steps into Gandhi’s shoes and transforms from a new teen into a responsible and sensitive teen adult who cares for those near him.

He gave up his favorite ice cream for his mother when he wanted to save his neighbor being attacked by a mob and called his school friend Daman, who is a Sikh, to see if he was him. It is that part of the book that is thinking of confirming and his family was okay at the time of the riot, which noticed the birth of Gandhi in his adolescent mind.
