(Reuters)-Google will use Samsung Electronics (OTC :) Co Ltd to supply 5G modems to its next flagship product, the Pixel smartphones. Qualcomm (NASDAQ :) Inc.

Earlier this month, Google revealed that it had designed its own processor chip to power the new Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro high-end handsets, ending its full reliance on Qualcomm. Qualcomm will continue to supply chips for the lower priced Pixel 5A.

Asia previously reported that Samsung (KS :) will manufacture Google’s processor, which is a unit of Alphabet (NASDAQ :) Inc. Two sources familiar with the issue say Reuters Samsung will also offer 5G modem technology.

The move of Samsung, which provides Pixel’s modem technology, is important. The Korean company is one of only three companies in the world that can manufacture 5G modems that connect devices to wireless data networks. Others include Qualcomm, a major market leader, and MediaTek Inc in Taiwan.

Samsung makes extensive use of Exynos modem technology in its flagship smartphones in Asia and Europe. However, it has long relied on Qualcomm to provide a modem for the US version.

This is because Qualcomm is leading the technology in a variant of 5G networks called millimeter waves, offering the fastest speed available in new networks. To date, all smartphones released in the United States, including the Apple Inc (NASDAQ :) iPhone, have used millimeter-wave networks using the Qualcomm chip.

Samsung told Reuters that the new modem technology is capable of millimeter-wave networking, and Google said the new phone will support millimeter-wave networks as in previous versions, but both companies will work together with the new pixel. Do not comment directly on whether you are working.

Kevin Krewell, Principal Analyst at TIRIAS Research, won Google’s Pixel business, giving Samsung the first big opportunity to showcase its chip manufacturing skills to a wide range of phone industries. This Korean company has never sold 5G modem chip technology to outside companies.

Qualcomm said in a statement that it maintained its technological lead as millimeter-wave technology relied on other chips in addition to modems. “Modems aren’t enough to support millimeter waves in phones,” Qualcomm said.
