Government forms a panel to review the criteria for determining economically weak sections

The government has revisited the criteria for determining economically weak sections and formed a committee to book them.

The government notified the Supreme Court last week that it had made a considered decision to review the standards.

In an official memorandum issued on Tuesday, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment reiterated the criteria for the government to form a committee in accordance with the commitments given to the Supreme Court and determine the economically weak section (EWS). The Committee will review the criteria for determining the EWS category, taking into account the views of the Supreme Court. It also reviews the various approaches taken so far in the country to identify economically vulnerable sections and recommends criteria that may be adopted to identify the EWS category in the future.

Members of the committee are former Treasury Secretary Ajay Bhushan Pandey, Member Secretary of the Indian Social Science Research Council (ICSSR) VK Malhotra, and Sanjay Sanial, Chief Economic Advisor of the Government.

The committee was asked to complete the work within three weeks.
