Healthy Cocktails for Christmas

Christmas is almost upon us, to spread some cheer here are our favourite healthy cocktails to lift the spirits and the vitamin intake!

If you’re full to the brim of Glüwein or mulled wine how about trying something a little different with a natural, healthy twist? The following are a list our favourite healthy cocktails with an added extra or Christmas bonus!

1. Sangria is a traditional wine-based, fruit cocktail served in Spain. Generally it would be a red wine, brandy, orange juice, soda water and seasonal fruits such as slices of orange, apple, and some sugar to sweeten, all served over ice in a large jug. You can try this over the festive season but for something a little different, how about this recipe:

WHITE LAVENDER SANGRIA 

  • 1 Bottle of dry white wine or Prosecco
  • 125ml Brandy
  • 125ml Orange Liquor
  • 200ml Soda Water
  • 100g Strawberries – sliced
  • 2 Peaches or Nectarines sliced
  • 50g Coconut Sugar (or raw unrefined sugar)
  • 80ml hot water
  • 2tsp Dried Lavender
  • 2 Sprigs Fresh Lavender
  • Ice to serve

METHOD

Combine the hot water with the sugar and dried lavender (if you don’t have any you can use a small amount of fresh), and stir until all the sugar is fully dissolved. Strain the liquid into a glass and allow to cool, then refrigerate.

Meanwhile, take a large jug or pitcher and add a few cubes of ice. Throw in most of the sliced peaches and a few of the sliced strawberries, keeping some of both back for garnish. Now add the wine, brandy and orange liqueur, and then fill almost to the top with soda water.

Add you lavender syrup water and top the jug with some extra strawberries, peaches and the lavender sprigs. And don’t forget to eat the fruit at the end.

Serve in wine glasses.

2. Moscow Mules are popular cocktails that add a little citrus to an otherwise simple concoction. This version embodies that but adds a little Christmas flavour in the form of the added orange and cinnamon…

CHRISTMAS IN MOSCOW

per glass

  • 1/2 can Ginger Beer
  • 50ml freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 25ml Vodka
  • Juice of half a lime
  • A slice of fresh orange and lime
  • Sprinkle of cinnamon or cinnamon stick to taste.

Add ice to your glass tumbler or copper cup, pour over the vodka followed by the lime and orange juice. Then add your ginger beer and stir gently. Add the orange and lime slices, a sprinkling of cinnamon or stick and serve.

3. Champagne, Cava or Prosecco are bountiful during the Christmas period so why not add a simple twist to make your welcome drink for your guests that extra bit special.

CHAMPAGNE THYME

  • 125ml Champagne (or bubbles of choice)
  • 2 Strawberries, one diced finely, one sliced.
  • 1/4 tsp Fresh or dried thyme leaves finely chopped and a few for garnish
  • 1/4 tsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp Brandy

METHOD

Combine the diced strawberry with the fresh or dried thyme and add a dash of sugar, and the brandy- allow to sit for at least half an hour. Place the strawberry mixture at the bottom of a champagne glass, pour in a glass of your chosen sparking wine and garnish with the sliced strawberries and thyme leaves.

3. This is not just one for the ladies as the name would suggest, but a great way to combine two firm favourites, whilst keeping it light and fruity.

PINK LADY

per glass

  • 25ml Vodka, chilled
  • 50ml Dry Rose Wine, chilled
  • 1tbsp Fresh Apple Juice, chilled
  • Sprig of Rosemary to garnish

METHOD

Pour the vodka into a chilled martini or similar, style glass, add the rose wine and apple juice. Top with the rosemary sprig and serve immediately.

4. A favourite in my house, this gin-based drink provides perfect pre-dinner cocktails after a brisk winter walk. If you happen to have some sloe gin this can also work very well.

BRAMBLE BREEZER

per glass

  • 25ml Gin
  • 1 tsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tsp sugar syrup
  • 5 blackberries, blitzed and one to serve
  • 2 slithers of lemon peel
  • 1/2 can/bottle of soda or tonic water.
  • Peppercorns (optional)

Place the blended blackberries, sugar syrup, and lemon juice in a small bowl and mix well. Once thoroughly combined add to the bottom of your serving glass, along with some ice, cover with the gin and top with soda water or tonic and stir gently. Garnish with the lemon peel and a few peppercorns.

Whichever option you choose, raise a glass and say cheers to yourself for making it through another year fit, healthy and well! Merry Christmas!
