He encountered racism as a child, but escaped racism because of the pale skin he inherited from Creole’s mother. By the time he was twelve, he had lost his parents.

In 1979, Ice-T joined the US Army because the money he earned from selling cannabis and stealing car stereos wasn’t enough to feed his girlfriend and daughter. He served in the Army for four years.

By 1983, he had adopted the name Ice-T in honor of Iceberg Slim and recorded a rap called The Coldest Rap on the funky Jimmy Jam-Terry Lewis backing track on indie label Saturn.

After honing his skills by creating music for video and releasing recordings, he signed to Sire Records in 1987 and released his debut album, “Rhyme Pays.”

Between 1987 and 1988, he recorded the title theme song for Dennis Hopper’s movie “Colors” about the life of an urban gangster in Los Angeles.

His 1992 album, Body Count, contained a controversial song called Cop Killer, intended as a story from the perspective of a criminal revenge on a racist police officer.

He worked with a heavy metal band during this time. In the movie “Judgment Night”, he made a duet with Slayer, and in 1995 a guest starred in Black Sabbath’s “Forbidden”.
