Iowa farmers prepare for what could be the most expensive crop ever

Farmers in southeastern Iowa are preparing to grow what could be the most expensive crop ever in 2022.

Oskaloosa’s Mark Jackson tells Brownfield that he has already seen the impact of rising input costs as he plans for the next growth period.

“The same is true for the entire machine (and) because of our fertilizer costs, chemical costs, and other input costs. What you want is profit when we hit highs.”

Jackson wants to make the same big profits from this year’s harvest, as it did last time when corn exceeded $ 5 and soybeans exceeded $ 12 per bushel.

“In 2013 and ’14, when we reached their final peak, we could upgrade and update machines just because we knew that the cycle of what we were doing was up and down. I’m done, so I think it’s important to look ahead. “

Jackson says it delivers about $ 12.20 of soybeans on a 65-cent basis within days of harvest.
