Jason Plato says he will return to the BTCC in 2021 – Motorsports

After participating in the 2020 campaign, Plato and Vauxhall team Powermaxed Racing have confirmed that a 53-year-old player will take control of Astra this season.

Plato has put together a new two-year contract with the team to cover 2020-21 after returning to the winners’ circle at the end of 2019, his first season at PMR.

However, in the midst of the coronavirus crisis, the driver and team jointly decided to postpone the first season of the deal because they could not give their commercial partners the value they deserved. In short, all 2020 BTCC rounds were held in closed rooms. ..

While the health pandemic was still in full swing, questions were raised about whether two-time champion Plato would return in 2021, and the parties remained silent on the matter.

Adam Weaver, Principal of the PMR team, told Motorsport.com: [that Plato would return]..

“The only reason we felt we had to announce it [at this point] I’m tired of the people asking me if he’s on board.

“We aimed to effectively deploy all the contracts we signed in 2020 in 2021, and the majority of the sponsors we have are very pleased with it.

“Jason was happy to roll it for his own safety and his parents. They always make up a lot of his racing life, they are not spring chickens, he is in his fifties!”

Plato said: “2020 wasn’t ideal for many of us, but we have time to look at many things.

“Fortunately, I was able to spend a lot more time at home with my family, but now I want to go back to the race car.

“This is the longest time I haven’t raced and I’ve come to appreciate how much I like it and I really miss the team.

“I’m excited about the future of Powermaxed Car Care Racing. Winning the 2019 final race has ignited me and I’m ready to go back and win the 100th race!”

Plato and Matt Jackson grabbed the steering wheel and the 2020 PMR plan to run a team of two cars for the honor of the BTCC maker was reversed, instead the team gave many drivers an opportunity with the Singleton Astra. I did.

“Last year was a very strange year for us. Not fighting in the top 10 is not something we are used to, but it was great to bring new talent to the car,” Weaver added. ..

“We are cautiously optimistic about some of the strong results since 2021, coupled with Jason’s success at the end of 2019 and the extensive development program we have been working on in the winter.”

“It’s too early to tell,” Weaver said of whether PMR would return Vauxhall to the BTCC maker’s championship. “I’ll leave it in the air.”

The second driver has not yet been identified, and Weaver has denied speculation that 2017 British GT champion Rick Parfitt Jr. will enter the BTCC rookie season with the team.

“I’m not yet close to doing business with someone in the second seat,” he said.

“That doesn’t mean I can’t make a deal. We’re one of the two sheets left on the grid, and I think it’s probably the most reliable sheet left on the grid.

“We are taking the time to get the best talent possible.”
