Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp said Caoimhin Kelleher will play in the Reds in the EFL Cup final against Chelsea next month, as fitness allows.
The Irish goalkeeper, Allison’s Understudy at Anfield, played in three of the five EFL Cup games of the season, including the victory in Round 2 of the 2-0 semifinals at Arsenal on Thursday. ..
Kelleher has played 15 times in all Liverpool tournaments, and former Irish international Shay Given recently suggested that a 23-year-old player should leave the club to look for regular football.
However, Klopp claimed that the EFL Cup was “his competition” before his first leg with Arsenal, and explained that Allison played only in a 0-0 draw in Anfield last week. This is because Brazilians needed a “rhythm” after spelling out with COVID-19.
At a press conference prior to Sunday’s trip to the Premier League’s Crystal Palace, Klopp was asked if Kelleher would keep his place in the Wembley final on February 27.
“We consider Caoi mh to be a good goalkeeper and want to keep him here. To keep him here, we need to make a few things to check.
“It’s all about how you act, and if he didn’t act like he did, I would probably see it different. He has us against him. It shows that it deserves all the trust and faith that it has.
“I don’t know why Caoimh doesn’t play. He deserves it, he brought the team there.”
Klopp also praised Trent Alexander Arnold. He increased the season total to 14 in all tournaments with two assists when Diogo Jota defeated the Gunners.
In Europe’s top five leagues, only Bayern Munich’s Thomas Müller (18) has won more, with the Germans playing four more games than Alexander Arnold.
“No one knows the decisive person on the right back, like Trent,” Klopp said. “I can hear people talking when the TV is on the return bus. They say,” Yeah, he’s not that good defensively “… Honestly, he was very well last night. I thought I played defensively.
“”[Gabriel] Martinelli, I’ll talk about this player in the future. If he avoids major injuries he will have a decent career, so he’s really good and what he did there [Alexander-Arnold] And how he was defensively busy, where he appeared, and all these kinds of things … [overall] Trent’s packaging is insane.
“He doesn’t deliver every day. There are still departments he can improve and need to improve. We are working on it … he still plays, creates, for 15 years or more. There’s scoring, learning and improvement. The last five years have been a good start to what I call a career. “
