Labor shortages affecting the poultry sector

Labor shortages plague employers and the poultry industry is looking for an answer.

Brad Finstad, executive director of Minnesota Turkish producers, told Brownfield that he is unfamiliar with this role and is looking forward to working with other product groups to find a solution.

“With the help of state-wide education systems and labor development agency partners, we are really trying to help move the needle forward on that issue.”

He calls ag labor a “complex” problem and states that one of the challenges is to make young people aware of the opportunities that exist.

“From an immigrant perspective, it’s definitely a federal issue, and I think we need to address the workforce flow and how it works, so perhaps in our classroom (and) FFA program. There are different levels and layers (starting) at the local level. “

Finstad suggests that schools can be incubators from both local and state perspectives. At the federal level, he wants politics set aside to address the labor shortage he says is expanding beyond the ag sector.
