The switch leaker is heading to jail.
Nintendo leaker Ryan “Ryan Rocks” Hernandez was sentenced to three years in prison.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Hernandez will spend the next three years in prison, followed by seven years of under surveillance release. He also needs to register as a sex offender.
In 2016, Hernandez and his colleagues used phishing to steal Nintendo employee credentials and grant access to sensitive information. This included information about the company’s upcoming switch console.
According to a hacking investigation, FBI agents apparently contacted Hernandez at home in October 2017 and promised to “stop any further malicious activity.” He also clearly confirmed that he understood the consequences of future hacks.
The following year, he returned to his criminal life, running a chat room called Ryan’s Underground Hangouts, and discussing his hacking skills online. Here he discussed with Nintendo how to steal information from platform holders.
The FBI searched home in June 2019 and seized the electronics and hardware used to access pirated games. In addition to Nintendo’s confidential information, Hernandez had over 1,000 child pornographic videos and photos in a folder named “Bad Stuff.”
In February of this year, he hacked Nintendo’s servers and pleaded guilty to downloading and possessing child pornography.
In addition to having to go to jail and register as a sex offender, Hernandez agreed to pay Nintendo $ 259,323 in damages.
