Auer joined BMW last year as a factory driver and returned to DTM. At DTM, it was competing with rival maker Mercedes until the end of the 2018 program.
The Austrian driver won Marche’s first victory of the season in the Lusatia ring, leading Timo Glock 1-2 and winning his second podium at Zolder later that year. However, the inconsistent form meant that the campaign ended in 12th place in the BMW stables, ahead of Philipp Eng.
With DTM moving away from the Class 1 rules of the private-based GT3 formula in 2021, BMW’s chances of joining the series will continue until the new M4-based GT3 Challenger is approved in September. This may leave Auer with no remaining options. In this year’s series.
BMW has also reduced its participation in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship to just four races that make up the Michelin Endurance Cup, but the Formula E program will end at the end of the 2020/21 season.
Auer said he and BMW split in good condition because they couldn’t put together a program for the 2021 season.
“When we agreed to work together earlier last year, the focus was on the future. The focus on both me and BMW Motorsport was clearly on DTM. Then there was an exciting and sometimes difficult season. I did, of course, mainly because of Corona, but I still got the win and the podium.
“The restructuring of DTM after Audi announced its withdrawal required a reassessment of the situation. In many discussions, along with the situation of BMW Motorsport, the best solution for both sides in terms of future direction. We had to come to the conclusion that we couldn’t really find it. [end our] Premature cooperation.
“My goal is very clear. I want to be in the top championship again this year. I want to compete for victory in the top championship again this year.”
Auer also missed the Rolex 24 at the start of the IMSA season last weekend, and BMW called on three 2020 DTM drivers, Marco Wittmann, Glock and En to strengthen their lineup.
A 26-year-old man who raced in Super Formula with Red Bull’s support in 2019 before returning to DTM also tested BMW’s Formula E car last year, but the German manufacturer signed Jake Dennis instead. Alexander Sims for Mahindra took a vacant seat.
