Miami-In Miami-Dade County, Florida, a major rescue operation is underway after a 12-story home has partially collapsed and at least one person has died.
Rescuers combed the rubble, looking for a trapped survivor, and were seen pulling the boy alive.
An image from the surfside north of Miami Beach shows a pile of debris on one side of the building. At least eight people were injured.
The collapse is said to have occurred around 2 am
It is unknown how many people were in the building at that time.
According to County Commissioner Jose Diaz, 51 people believed to have lived in the building have not been contacted and have not yet been explained.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said it had sent 80 vehicles to the scene. The police are also supporting rescue operations.
Officials said the rescue team pulled 35 people from the wreckage. Ten people were evaluated and treated, two of whom were sent to the hospital.
“The backside of the building, perhaps more than a third, is completely pancakes,” Surfside Mayor Charles Barckett said at a news conference. At least one person was killed and about 30 units were affected, he said.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said he would travel to South Florida later Thursday. “Given the destruction we’re seeing, we’re preparing for some bad news,” he warned.
He said he thought the quick response from the ambulance crew saved his life.

Police have designated the location of the building as 8777 Collins Avenue. This is the address of the 12-story Champlan Tower, with over 100 beachfront apartments, built in 1981. The surfside runs along Collins Avenue, north of the Miami Beach border.
I could see rescue workers using a crane to help evacuate to a resident of a nearby apartment.
A man walking his dog with his brothers explained that he heard the building collapse.
“Basically, we heard a really loud noise and thought it was a motorcycle. Looking back, we saw a cloud of dust just coming in,” he said. CBS Miami..
“We were like,’What’s going on?’ I wore a shirt and headed in a hurry, and a guard came out and I was like, “What’s wrong?” She said the building had collapsed. “
A man who witnessed the aftermath of the collapse told CNN, “it looked like something from 9/11,” referring to the attack that destroyed the Twin Towers in New York in 2001.
Santomezil, 50, woke up when his wife called from a unit on the 9th floor of one of the three buildings that make up the Champlan Tower. She is an overnight caretaker for an elderly woman with a disability.
“She said she heard a big explosion,” said Özil. Miami Herald.. “It felt like an earthquake.” His wife was one of the rescued people. (BBC)
