Michigan farmers want to plant sugar cane by the end of the month

It will take at least two more weeks for Sam Area farmer Dennis Gardner to be able to do fieldwork.

“We’re a little heavy soil, so it’s definitely wet here,” he shares.

Yale farmers tell the Brownfield that this is the week he prefers to start planting sugar cane, but this year it’s not, and the forecast says it will rain more.

“I think most of the beets will probably be planted in the first week of May,” he says.

Wheat in his area is just breaking dormancy.

“It looks pretty good. There are some pockets here and there with a little water and ice. Hopefully there’s some nitrogen in it, making it a little green,” he says.

When he can finally get into the field, Gardner says he has all his inputs and hopes it will continue throughout the season.
