Michigan State University has announced that Peter Ward has been appointed Senior Advisor to Coaching Staff and Dylanstrom has joined the program as a Volunteer Assistant Coach.
Ward has provided significant experience and has recently served as a special mission scout for USA Hockey on his second mission at the organization. He worked for USA Hockey for eight seasons as Assistant Director of Players and then Director of Players at NTDP. While at NTDP, Ward helped the United States win six gold in the IIHF Under 18 Championship.
Ward was a US Golden Knights Scout from 2016 to 2019 while at USA Hockey.
“Peter has a lot of experience as a coach advisor, so it’s good to have him on board,” Spartans coach Danton Cole said in a statement. “People with Peter’s experience at both individual and team Scouting levels bring knowledge and unique aspects to the team and make us better as coaches.”
Strom is an active member of the US Air Force, came to MSU from Colorado and was the head coach of a high school. Strom has been the head coach of Fort Collins High School for the past three seasons, setting a record for the regular season of 39-6-3 (.844). He led Fort Collins to the state semifinals in all three seasons behind the bench and to the championship game in 2020 and 2021.
Strom worked as an assistant to Team Colorado for two seasons with former Spartan assistant coach George Wozdeck. He was Head Coach of the Colorado Prep Hockey League from 2016 to 2021 and helped the team win an invitation to the USA Hockey Nationals in 2021.
“There are many qualifications in today’s society, and what Dylan is doing actually represents the opposite of how he is trying to move forward in his coaching career,” Cole said. “He brings a very important leadership aspect, which will bring significant benefits to all of our players.
“I’m excited that both Peter and Dylan can participate in our program.”
In addition, two current staff members are in new positions. Dan Sturges, who joined the program as director of hockey operations in 2018, has earned the title of director of hockey strategy, video and analytics. Barbara Powers has been in the Spartan Hockey Program since 2016 and currently holds the title of Director of Hockey Operations.
