On the European Tour player blog, Daniel Van Tonda looks back on his decade as a pro, winning his first European Tour victory and breaking his wife’s relationship with Caddy Abi. “It’s not like I’ve been a professional for 10 years, it’s really quick, but I feel like I’ve learned a lot before I take part in the European Tour.
I turned professional in 2011 and Q-School was in December, so 2012 was the first year of the Sunshine Tour, but it was really fun. But it taught me a lot about myself and helped me find myself. I was fortunate to be able to spend my wife Abi in a bag for eight years.
We won together, won the European Tour card and recently played in the first major. And most of the achievements have to go to my wife because I didn’t do anything without her. ”
Daniel Van Tonda, Statement
“She is an important part of my game.
I actually met her at the 2014 co-licensed Nelson Mandela Championship in Durban, where she worked at a driving range. She always wanted to play golf and she was good at everything and enjoyed going out on the course once, so she decided to play with her at the end of 2015.
She is wonderful She yardages 90% of the time she makes club choices. So all the birdies I make are thanks to her, and when I’m listening, it’s thanks to her. She also helps me with my swing, which is very unique.
In fact, I’ve never been a self-taught coach and with her help I do everything myself. She knows my swing very well and I’m not a very technical person. I like to stick to the basics, so they usually help me quickly when I have a hard time.
It’s almost always been the case since I started playing golf when I was 12 years old. My parents were the ones who forced me to do it, and over time I just self-taught. From 8am to 5pm, I practiced playing games and chilling. I don’t think any kids enjoy doing it. Not very good situation.
And you start to enjoy it. Because it’s time away from certain things. And you keep working. Until I graduated early from school, I fell in love with it, playing full-time golf from the age of 16 and creating national junior and senior colors. All the while, I felt much more comfortable coaching myself. ”
