Expert picks are back in the Australian Open quarterfinals on Tuesday when Rafael Nadal will face Denis Shapovalov and Matteo Berrettini will face Gael Monfils. A panel of three teams previews the action and makes predictions.
Denis Shapovalov vs. (6) Rafael Nadal
Ricky: Nadal played Janic Hanfman instead of Tanashiko Kinakis in the second round, Adrian Manarino instead of Hubert Hurkacz and Aslan Karazev in the fourth round, and Shapovalov instead of Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals. If he wins this, the Spaniards will encounter either Matteo Berrettini or Gael Monfils instead of Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals. Are the stars in line for the 21st Major Title and Double Career Grand Slam? I’m starting to feel that way. Nadal was very good at his own rights, in addition to good luck. He won the title at Melbourne 250 this season 7-0 and has won four compelling victories at the Australian Open. Shapovalov is dangerous, but he probably doesn’t have the consistency to beat Nadal in the top five situations. Line up in 4 rows for the Spaniards in this match-up series. Nadal 4: 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3..
Cheryl: To be honest, expectations for Nadal at the Australian Open were pretty low. The 2009 champion has been sent off for more than six months due to a chronic foot injury. He also had a nasty seizure of Covid-19 in December, but recovered shortly before landing in Melbourne a few weeks ago. Nadal was handed a tough draw and I thought he would be too rusty. But here he’s in a quarter — and more importantly, he’s playing well. His serve looks better for a while and he gets a lot of pop in the forehand. Shapovalov has held great tournaments so far. The Canadian bombarded Zverev and he helped lead his country to the crown of the ATP Cup. Shapovalov defeated Nadal at his first meeting in 2017, reaching within a few points of knocking out the Spaniards from the Roman Masters last year. His blockbuster game is the kind that can give Nadal difficulty, and he has played particularly well in 2022 so far. Nadal should go through, but Shapovalov is trying to get him to work for it. Nadal of 5: 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5..
Pete: Ironically, it was Nadal who got the front and center attention at the Australian Open last week as some key obstacles (Djokovic and Zverev) on the road to the 21st major title were eliminated. is. The opponent in the quarterfinals is Shapovalov, who defeated the Olympics and the 2021 Nitto ATP Finals Champion in a straight set. Canadians are grateful that they were able to save energy in the final round as they were tested early in the tournament. In the second round, I recovered from 2 sets to 1 deficit. Nadal has dropped only one set so far and has taken a more direct route to the quarter. The 2009 AO Champion has left Melbourne seven times on the quarterfinal stage, including three of the last four years. He is looking straight at the awards that have missed him for over a decade and will probably focus on the semi-finals. Faced with Shapovalov instead of Zverev at this stage of the tournament is certainly a break towards history. Nadal 3: 7-5, 6-4, 6-3..
(17) Gael Monfils vs. (7) Matteo Berrettini
Ricky: I won Monfils in the semi-finals before the tournament started, but I’m not going to waffle. It wasn’t when he won the straight set four times in a row. The French have always been one of the most talented players in the world. When he is healthy and motivated, he also number one.. Monfils is both now. Berettin did not lose his set with Pablo Carreño Basta on Sunday, but was tested in all four games. The Italians have been good for the last two weeks, but not great. Their only previous Grand Slam encounter (2019 US Open quarterfinals) went to the fifth set of tiebreakers. I’m hoping for something similar … but this time Monfils won. Monfils of 5: 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-3..
Cheryl: This is one of the more amazing quarterfinals. Berrettini has been impressively consistent in the majors for the past year or so, but Monfils was the exact opposite. The French could hardly win a match a year ago. Last week he sent all four opponents in a straight set. In Berrettini’s monster game, I expect Monfils’ straight set victory to end suddenly. The Italian serve wasn’t as effective as on the grass on these slow hardcourts, but it’s still a fierce weapon and will do some damage. The audience is arguably behind Monfils, one of the most popular veteran players on the tour. But in the end, I hope Berrettini will win the spot in his first Australian Open semi-final. Berrettini 4: 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4..
Pete: Don’t forget Monfils’s ferocious start to 2020. Two titles were 16-3, losing only twice to Novak Djokovic and Dominic Thiem. The pandemic seems to have had a bigger impact on Monfils than anyone else on the ATP Tour. The French lost only four games he played when he returned in September, and finally won the game in May after losing the first three games in 2021. As a result, he absolutely enjoys the success of starting 2022. He has already won the title in Adelaide and has recorded four consecutive victories in Melbourne. In fact, Monfils lost only five games in each of the first two games. This is Monfils’ second appearance in the quarterfinals when he visited AO 17 times. Berrettini currently has quarter-final berths in each of the last four majors. The Italian was 4-0 on a tiebreaker in the tournament and certainly received his wakeup call on his third encounter with Alcaraz at a distance. For Monfils, this is a significant increase in the overall talent level of the net compared to his first four games. Berrettini 4: 7-6 (4), 6-3, 4-6, 6-3..
