Last month, Nintendo issued a cease and desist order to the organizers of Big House, one of Super Smash Bros.’s most famous tournaments. The event will be held online for a pandemic, and close quarters will be played through a mod called “Slippi” that provides stable online play for the game. Nintendo said the organizer was forced to cancel the event because it was using an “illegal copied version of the game,” but players said the studio was opposed to using the “Slippi” mod. I believe. The hashtag #FreeMelee started to trend shortly after the tournament was cancelled.

Nintendo canceled the live stream of the Splatoon 2 tournament after several players renamed it to a variation of the trending hashtag. Members of both the Splatoon and Super Smash Bros. communities want to be able to convince Nintendo to change their current stance on the “Slippi” mod.
