Tokyo (Reuters)-Japan’s Nintendo (T :) said on Friday that a global chip shortage forced the company to reduce expectations for hit song sales. switch (NYSE :) Devices are also hitting hardware development.
“The semiconductor situation has some impact on hardware development,” Hiroshi Shioda, an executive at Nintendo, who leads the development team, told analyst briefings.
“We are considering replacing components and fine-tuning the design to reduce the impact,” he added.
The comment was the day after President Shuntaro Furukawa said there were no signs that the chip shortage would be alleviated as Nintendo lowered Switch’s full-year sales forecast.
Based in Kyoto, the company relies heavily on the console business when its well-funded rivals such as Microsoft (NASDAQ :) are expanding their subscription and cloud gaming services.
Nintendo declined to comment on its plans for next-generation hardware on Friday, but mentions “integrated hardware-the next gaming system for software” on a company slide.
