Many van drivers rely on side mirrors, but rearview mirrors aren’t very useful if there are dividers or cargo behind them. As the bumper sticker declares, “If you can’t see my mirror, I can’t see you!”
Ford is currently introducing a “smart mirror.” This new system looks exactly like a regular rearview mirror, but it’s actually a high-resolution screen that clearly shows the panoramic view behind the van. This allows the driver to find bicycles, pedestrians, and other vehicles that may be behind, even if the windowless rear doors and dividers are in the way.
The full-display interior mirror displays live feed from the camera on the back of the van and features automatic brightness control for optimal daytime and nighttime visibility. This system provides twice the field of view of traditional rearview mirrors. This gives the driver a better idea of what is going on around him as he approaches the roundabout, changes lanes, and checks before merging or turning to a side road.
Ford’s new mirrors can be especially beneficial for delivery drivers who frequently disembark in cities where they are likely to be encountered on bicycles, electric scooters, or on foot. Vulnerable road users accounted for 70% of road fatalities in urban areas of Europe in 2019.
Great for business
Ford’s new mirrors could benefit businesses as they not only reduce the need to repair damage from costly accidents, but can also help reduce insurance premiums. Installing the system can also improve uptime (the time a commercial vehicle is working on the road).Ford announced last week FORD Liive – A new connection uptime system designed to maximize vehicle uptime.
Mirrors are now available for Ford Transit and Transit Custom Vans with windowless rear doors. Any Ford dealer can order and install a system compatible with Transit vans manufactured from 2014 and Transit custom models manufactured from 2012.
“Providing maximum visibility for drivers is an important factor in building driver confidence and ensuring a safe journey for drivers and other road users, especially in urban areas where attention is needed. – – Owen Legory, Director, Commercial Vehicle After-Sales, Ford of Europe
