Makhachev continues his claim on the title shot after the next dominant performance.
Makhachev took on a short-term replacement of Hooker after his originally planned opponent, former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos, was injured. He didn’t take long to finish his opponent.
The battle began where both fighters looked like a process of feeling as they tried to find range, but Makhachev landed the right hook and shot for a takedown, only 40 rounds. After a second I put the hooker on my back.
From there, it was all Makhachev, as Makhachev remained heavy on and began to work to isolate Hooker’s right arm. Despite his best efforts to coordinate and defend his attempts, Hooker was unable to escape. Makhachev stepped over Hooker’s head and cranked to secure verbal submissions as Hooker’s other arm was trapped under his body.
In a post-combat interview with Daniel Cormier, Makhachev clearly and clearly indicated his intention to go out next. “How many times (in a row) do you fight now, nine times?” Makhachev asked. “Now the title shot is ready.”
