Odisha’s Rourkela’s 18-year-old girl Shreya Lenka has been named the fifth member of the popular Korean pop band Blackswan.
Stage name Sriya’s Lenka will join the former members of the girl group Youngheun, Fatou, Judy and Leia, along with Brazil’s Gabriela Dalcin (Gabi) as the sixth member.
Record label DR Music welcomed Lenka and Dalcin on their Instagram post.
“With their debut, we’ll be back with the new Blackswan,” read the post with a photo of the new members.
Lenca and Darsin were selected for the band after participating in a six-month global audition announced by DR Music last year after Heme left the girl group.
Philip YJ Yun, director of DR Music Entertainment Korea, said Lenca and Darsin worked well together during the audition process.
“They showed us a very positive energy in sticking together and achieving each task that needs to be overcome. That’s why we decided not to separate them. That was one of the reasons, “Yoon told PTI in an email exchange.
As part of the training that began in December, both artists needed to work on Korean, dance and vocal skills.
“The duo will now start preparing for their new album and stage performance,” Yun added.
The trained dancer Lenca was introduced to K-pop by a friend a few years ago. She found the choreography of the music video to be very attractive, and she became obsessed with the “unique style” of singing and dancing.
Boy band Exo became obsessed with BTS, Stray Kids and The Boyz songs after teenagers introduced the world of K-POP. In 2020, she saw the K-pop record label open an online audition for the COVID-19 pandemic and decided to give it a try.
When Lenka’s family learned that she was applying for a K-POP audition, her grandmother introduced her to a classical music teacher. Her short stint learning her Odissi helped her improve her subtle nuances.
