Offshore wind projects get federal funding

The National Offshore Wind Research and Development Consortium (NOWRDC) has announced that it will fund six new wind projects in supply chain efficiency, asset monitoring, and inspection of $ 3.4 million.

Three new supply chain projects aim to ensure high quality component production and simplify the transportation of major wind farm components. The other three asset monitoring and inspection projects aim to reduce operating costs for offshore wind farms. University of Massachusetts – Lowell, “New Structural Health Monitoring System for Offshore Wind Turbines”. And dive technology for “fully autonomous underwater asset inspection with autonomous underwater vehicles launched on the coast”.

Once the deal is signed, the six new projects will bring NOWRDC’s total funding portfolio to $ 31 million for 46 projects. With the first two RFPs, 40 projects received $ 28 million from the consortium.

In 2020, NOWRDC awarded $ 10.3 million to 12 projects through a competitive process. Included projects:

The US Department of Energy (DOE) established NOW RDC in 2018 to address research priorities for offshore wind power. This supports the goal of deploying 30 GW of US offshore wind power by 2030.
