The government plans to thwart visitors to Sabah trying to enter Sul, the southern Philippines, after a reported incident of a mysterious virus in the Malaysian region.

“We also ban the movement of people from Sabah to Sul,” Secretary of Defense Delphin N. Lorenzana told a cabinet meeting that aired on Saturday.

President Rodrigo R. Duterte called for a cabinet meeting over the weekend to discuss a new variant of the coronavirus that was first detected in the United Kingdom.

A suspected virus case was reported in Sabah, but experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) said it was different from the British strain.

Sul officials sought help from the national government following reports of a new virus in the Malaysian region, which the Philippines claims to be its territory.

WHO coordinator of essential medicines and medical technology, Sokoro Escalante, said at a meeting that the mutation found in Sabah was not the same as the British variant, but another mysterious coronavirus variant found in South Africa, Australia and the Netherlands. Said that.

“We still don’t know the importance of this mutation and its impact from a public health system perspective,” she said. — — Gillian M. Cortez
