Traditionally, the sporting director has been the only point of audio contact between the pit wall and race control when communication needs arise during the race.
This year, F1 and the FIA have agreed to broadcast the selected conversation between the team and Michael Masi for the first time to give fans more insight.
As the season progressed, Wolf and Red Bull team bosses Christian Horner occasionally took over from their respective sporting directors Ron Meadows and Jonathan Wheatley, using communication channels to influence race control decisions. Abu Dhabi GP closing stage.
Horner demanded that the car wrapped in front of Max Verstappen be able to unlap, Wolff revealed his feelings after a controversial move, and a safety car when Antonio Jobinati stopped on the truck. I asked before that there wasn’t.
After the race, F1 Managing Director Ross Brawn suggested that team bosses should not be allowed to use the race control channel.
When asked by Autosport, “I agree with Ross,” Wolff asked if he shared the same view as Brown. “But I blamed Ross and I equally because it was part of the decision to broadcast more channels for transparency and entertainment for the fans.

“There’s so much going on with the intercom that it makes sense to give fans a little overview of every little drama that happens, such as a car breaking down or discussing certain strategies. But I think we’re overkill.
“I need to sniff myself, and Christian. I was given the opportunity to talk directly to the race director and fought fiercely for the benefit of the team, so everyone stepped over.
“Sure, it was certainly part of this year’s failure that the race director’s life didn’t get easier under the pressure of the team principals.”
Wolff suggested that not only should team principals be prohibited from talking to race directors, but there should be restrictions on what sporting directors can do.
“I need to come back,” he said. “I think the principal of the team must be the sporting director, not talking directly to the race director. I should go one step further and the sporting director may lobby or pressure the race director. Say not.
“They should point out situations that the race director and his colleagues may not have noticed, but may not have lobbyed or pressured.”
