Red Bull must not give up title chances like BMW – Motorsports

His view reflects the strategic mistakes BMW Sauber made in 2008.

That year, the Swiss-based team owned a competitive car and after winning its first Grand Prix victory in Canada, Robert Kubica led the world championship with four points from Lewis Hamilton.

However, BMW chose to switch focus early on to 2009 and believed that the next season would increase the chances of success.

The team’s form declined beyond the balance of 2008, and Kubica eventually finished fourth, 23 points behind champion Hamilton. Later, the 2009 car turned out to be disastrously uncompetitive, and BMW withdrew from F1 at the end of the season.

This year, all F1 teams will have to make difficult decisions about when to completely switch focus on the 2022 project.

Verstappen has made it clear that Red Bull should not give up early in this year’s program.

“We just have to keep pushing, we need to keep bringing new bits into the car,” he said.

“We’re confident that we’ll keep doing that and learn about the direction and things of the setup, sometimes from things that still don’t work … you learn every weekend, right?

“So if we then adjust and continue to learn, we are confident that we can have a very strong season.”

Asked to clarify his thoughts on continued development, he revealed that he could not guarantee that the team still had a winning package in 2022.

“I don’t think we should let go as long as we have a good chance of winning this championship.

“Of course it’s hard to say, but this year is a little tricky, but next year you can win. You never know. But if you have a chance this year, we’ll definitely aim for it.”

Recalling the example of BMW, he states: I think there are good people on the team who just have a good car next year. “

Verstappen believes his team is active at a high level this season.

“I heard another team saying we make more mistakes, and obviously not. Of course, no one is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes, but so far. I think I made the smallest mistake in a tight championship battle.

“That’s why I trust the team very much. That is, every time I drive a car in a pit lane, I know that there is a 99.9% chance that I will have a great stop. And it is also in such a pit lane. It’s great to get in and trust everyone. “

He also praised Honda for progress this season and the team dominated the race on tracks where linear performance was crucial.

“I think Honda has taken a good step so far this year. I think the performance is very close. It can be difficult to say due to wing height etc. But overall, we are more and more. I think it’s getting closer and closer.

“It’s not just about engine power, so it’s about many different things you have to be good at with an engine. But yeah, we’re always getting better. That’s great, of course.”
