Remnant: The day before the labyrinth arrives from Ash today

A few years ago, Darksiders developer Gunfire Games released Remnant: From The Ashes. It’s a third-person apocalyptic shooter, a little dark soul-y and a little roguelike-y, and pretty good. It’s not like I expected to get any kind of follow-up, be careful, but behold, Gunfire is starting the first part today. Named Chronos: Before The Ashes, he threw guns for his sword and dropped players into the labyrinth for good old RPG action.

Unlike its predecessor, Chronos is a single-player adventure with no online co-op. What it has is that there are a lot of traditional RPG stuff. The story revolves around you, the hero of a lifelong quest to save your home from evil, and all of it-you know the drill. Its weapon system is also all Soulslike-y and needs to match the skill of scaling what you are using (thus, some swords work more effectively in Strength and others are agile. It works).

However, the most interesting part of the game is the roguelike system. Each time you die in this big big labyrinth, the character has to wait a year before returning. So you are a little older with each new run of the maze. It’s not entirely clear what effect this will have, but it seems to work, as the Steam page says: “Once you start your journey, it’s easy to be strong and fast, but as you get older, wisdom becomes more important. It’s about esoteric powers.”

But I enjoy a little roguelike goodness. I admire when the game tries to make death a little more interesting. Oh yeah, I’ll probably try this.

Chronos: If you want to play The Ashes yourself, you’ll arrive on Steam around 6 pm GMT today (10 am GMT).

Update: I mistakenly thought this game was a new prequel, but it turned out not! Chronos is an old VR-only Gunfire game that has been overhauled to work on all platforms without a funky headset. To Dominique Tarason, a former RPS who pointed out this.
