Memphis, Tennessee — On July 31, authorities reopened the 40 interstate highway bridge between Arkansas and Tennessee, which had been closed since the crack was discovered in the May span.
According to a video shared by the Tennessee Department of Transportation, the Hernando Desoto Bridge, a major artery in US commerce, has been opened to the public for eastern traffic.
The eastbound lane was previously scheduled to open on August 2, but authorities have recently raised their plans. The Department of Transport said it plans to reopen the westbound lane of the bridge on August 6, but said it could move up as well.

The I-40 Bridge over the Mississippi River has a crack in one of two 900-foot horizontal steel beams that are critical to the structural integrity of the bridge, and thousands of trucks and cars are nearby on the interstate highway. It was closed on May 11 after being forced to detour to 55 Bridges. I-40 Bridge is under repair.
Beverly Robertson, CEO of the Greater Memphis Chamber of Commerce, celebrated the news of the reopening.
“The truck industry has lost a lot because we are the third busiest truck corridor in the country. So many goods and services come and go from there,” Robertson said. I told WREG-TV.
So far, an estimated $ 9.5 million has been spent repairing, designing, and inspecting bridges after closure, according to Arkansas transport officials. The cost is divided into two states.
The I-40 runs from North Carolina to California. Manufacturers and shippers use interstate highways to move products and materials across rivers. According to Tennessee Transport Authority, when the bridge is open, about 50,000 vehicles typically travel across the bridge, about a quarter of which are commercial trucks.
