Shell to build “Europe’s largest renewable hydrogen plant”

Shell said on Wednesday that the Dutch Hydrogen I Facility will become “Europe’s largest renewable hydrogen plant” when it goes into operation in 2025. Shell is one of several large companies aiming to put a marker in this sector.

Plans to build a major hydrogen plant in the Netherlands follow a final investment decision by a major oil and gas subsidiary shell..

In a Wednesday announcement, Shell said the Dutch Hydrogen I facility will become “Europe’s largest renewable hydrogen plant” when it goes into operation in 2025.

According to Shell, a 200-megawatt electrolytic cell will be installed at the Port of Rotterdam, Europe’s largest seaport, producing 60,000 kilograms of renewable hydrogen daily.

Hydrogen has various uses and can be introduced into various industries. It can be produced in several ways. One method involves the use of electrolysis, where the electric current divides the water into oxygen and hydrogen.

If the electricity used in this process comes from a renewable energy source such as wind or solar, some call it “green” or “renewable” hydrogen.

Shell said the Dutch electrolyzer will use renewable energy from the Hollandse Kust (noord) offshore wind farm, a 759 MW project scheduled to go live in 2023. Shell is a co-owner of the wind farm.

The hydrogen produced at the plant is sent to Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam using a new hydrogen pipeline called HyTransPort.

The idea is that this renewable hydrogen “replaces some of the gray hydrogen produced using fossil fuels” used in the field. “This will partially decarbonize the on-site production of energy products such as gasoline, diesel and jet fuel,” Shell said.

“Renewable hydrogen will play a vital role in future energy systems, and this project will help hydrogen realize its potential,” Anna Mascolo, Executive Vice President of Emerging Energy Solutions at Shell, said in a statement. This is an important step.
