Shovon Bhattacharjee, Raina MacIntyre and colleagues at the University of New South Wales wanted to see how well masks made of different fabrics and layers block respiratory droplets from sneezing in healthy adults.
Researchers have created a simple face mask with 17 commonly available fabrics. Each mask had one, two, or three layers of the same or different fabrics. A healthy 30-year-old volunteer wore each mask, tickled the inside of the nose with a cotton swab and tissue paper, and readjusted the mask just before sneezing began. Researchers captured a high-speed video of sneezing and calculated the intensity of droplets in the image in the area 2 cm from his mouth. For each fabric layer, the droplet blocking function has been improved by more than 20 times. Interestingly, all the three-layer fabric combinations the researchers tested were more effective than the three-layer surgical mask. The best masks for blocking droplets included a hydrophilic inner layer of cotton or linen, an absorbent intermediate layer of cotton / polyester blend, and a hydrophobic outer layer of polyester or nylon. Machine washing the mask did not reduce performance. In fact, masks containing cotton or polyester have slightly improved post-cleaning effects due to the shrinkage of the pores. Future studies are planned for more people and different age groups, the researchers say.
